Bumble Bee - Bombus

Bumble Bee - Bombus
Willow Park, Gardner River, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA
August 14, 2014
Large numbers of bumble bees were nectaring on the extensive stands of rayless coneflower, Rudbeckia occidentalis on the western side of the park. While we watched no butterflies visited the plants and the bumble bees were very active. The lack of ray flowers made the flower heads look inconspicuous even like they were done blooming, however they did have a distinctive odor maybe a bit like chocolate and cola mixed and maybe vanilla. If anyone else has experienced this odor we would like to hear what you thought they smelled like.
