The pictures helped
These are Melanoplus sanguinipes. Some of the clues include - bump on under side of middle of thorax (the low rounded one, not the "spur" between the front legs). Only a few species have this, and then mostly only males. The subgenital plate clearly shows the notch at the end on the second (under side) shot. And, of course the color pattern is typical of the species (but several look pretty much the same).

I can't help hoping the one lost his mite infestation with his last molt, but they probably stuck with him.

I suppose the mites are specific to grasshoppers - I wonder why they are so brightly colored?

They are in genus Melanoplus
Being male and nearly mature, I can probably identify the species, but it will be easier if you happen to have closer shots showing the end of an abdomen in clearer focus.
