Somewhat resembles Lyconotus lateralis, but with less orange that the other posted images.

yes this is Lyconotus lateral
yes this is Lyconotus lateralis, but much more black as noted, probably because of its northerly distribution, which in fact exceeds the known range- Maine to Illinois & Missouri to Texas, then down to Vera Cruz, includes Georgia and Florida....so it gets around ok...

Used to be Lycus lateralis in the subgenus Lyconotus (Green 1949) but Zaragosa-Caballero elevated Lyconotus to genus in 1995

Eisner did the big study on its unpalatability in 2008
