Ocypus nitens or Tasgius melanarius? - Ocypus nitens
Lanesborough on the Ashuwillticook Trail, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, USA
November 24, 2014
I'm aware of the dilemma of identifying this critter. I took the photo before i found out that the mouth parts should be photographed to spare my sanity in trying to id this guy. I've been reading and bouncing back and fourth between the two species and can't seem to see the other differences mentioned. I'm sure i read that one of the species has noticeably shorter wings but I can't see the difference. I do have a few more photos but I'll start with this one.

Hi Jason,

This is O. nitens, the elytra are indeed shorter than the length of the pronotum (especially at the middle.

Cheers,
Adam
