stone-winged owlet - Chytolita morbidalis

stone-winged owlet - Chytolita morbidalis
Thedford Conservation Area, Lambton, Ontario, Canada
May 28, 2004
In deciduous woods. C. petrealis has no common name but the species epithet may be translated as "stone-wing" - presumably a reference to the color and/or speckling. The ID is just a guess based on the CBIF image; dark individuals of the Morbid Owlet may also look like this but their markings generally aren't as prominent.
