Horace's Duskywing - Erynnis horatius - male

Horace's Duskywing - Erynnis horatius - Male
Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
May 30, 2004
Some of these Duskywing photos I've stared at until my eyes cross. I think I'll have to start sending them off for ID.

Moved from Duskywings.

I think this is
a male Horace's

Duskywing
I suspect this is not Wild Indigo (E. baptisiae), which usually has the basal part of the forewing darkened, rather than the dull brown on this specimen (unless this one is worn, but the wing fringes look pretty clean). I think it is either Juvenal's (E. juvenalis) or Horace's (E. horatius), but I don't think they can be reliably separated without seeing the hindwing underside. Brock and Kaufman state that Horace's is usually browner and plainer above, and I think this specimen fits that - it's certainly browner and plainer than the Juvenal's I see around here. However, I'm not even sure it's of that species pair - duskywings are hard! Any chance it was near one of the host plants (oaks or Wild Indigo/Crown Vetch) and not the other?

Host Plants
I must admit I am fairly ignorant when it comes to plants. I have a book, but never refer to it. Maybe this year I will do better. Thanks for the info. I'm going to change this one's name to pos Horace's Duskywing.
