Anobiid - Caenocara bicolor

Size: slightly less than 2 mm
This guy came to MV lamp on a warm spring night.

It was all tucked into a ball after being in alcohol. I was trying to pin it down long enough to pry loose the head but it kept popping around my microscope stage. The solution? Chewing gum. Stuck it down in some and it held it well enough I could get its head out. Amazing how much is tucked in there.

Luckily BugGuide has a bunch of these guys already (which makes things easier). It is definitely Caenocara bicolor (Germar) so far as I can tell. The uniform red head + pronotum seems to be distinctive. Used the key in Downie & Arnett's Beetles of NE N.A.

Thought the rest of you beetle guys would enjoy this.

I agree with Boris. If I remember correctly, there is at least another species that can have red on the pronotum.
