Been puzzling over this
Laphria
for a while. How much yellow can
L. thoracica
show in the face?

Laphria
That is an awful lot of yellow. But the legs and thorax and other features of this robber are all L thoracica. No one is studying the Laphria. Bullington moved on to forensic entomology the last I heard. And though I have a copy of his PhD dissertation on Laphria, I doubt it will ever be published. However, he did not study the large species. Someone needs to take a series of males up there and compare the genitalia.

cool
Thanks for confirming that it is
L. thoracica
. I just rediscovered the pics of this beast while checking out some photo CDs from a couple of years ago. Pretty sure I called it
L. thoracica
in the field.
That's a shame about Bullington. His website was an amazing resource for
Laphria
.

Holy ****!
That is an incredibly sharp image! What kind of lens do you use? And did you use a ring flash?

nope
That image was taken with a crappy little Nikon Coolpix 995, with the on-camera flash. It's been cropped and resized and sharpened.
