Bethylidae?
Not an ant. I'm reasonably sure it belongs in the Bethylidae, but I've been fooled by apterous non-ant aculeates before.

when I first saw it I had no idea what it was and then it dawned on me (wrong) that it was an ant.

I think it looks like Bethylidae: Dissomphalus

It is a very cool insect.
