Marsh Gentian damaged by Megachile - Megachile

Marsh Gentian damaged by Megachile - Megachile
Upper Sugarloaf Key, Old State Road 4a, Monroe County, Florida, USA
November 25, 2014
When I first saw this wild flower that was unfamiliar to me I was amazed by the most unusual shape of its petals. Later I found some intact flowers and it dawned on me that this must had been the work of a leaf-cutter bee (though I did not observe any bees at this flower). Typically, Megachile females carve fragments out of leaves but sometimes they use the petals of flowers, as with this Marsh Gentian (Eustoma exaltatum).
