Dance Fly - Empis spectabilis - Male
Fews Ford, Eno River State Park, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
April 6, 2007
Size: 10 mm
Seem to be fairly common on woodland vegetation in mid-spring around here. Size estimated.
Looks very similar to this one:

tentatively identified as Empis species.
See comments--this would be an Empis sensu lato, so I am going to place it there.

A matter of rank
All of these large dance flies belonged to genus Empis until recently. Since then , specialists have distinguished several - closely related .- genera. As a non specialist of Diptera, I routinley speak of "Empis at a broad sense" - a more practical than scientifical way of doing, I concede,
