Dyscinetus morator or Euetheola humilis? - Euetheola rugiceps

Dyscinetus morator or Euetheola humilis? - Euetheola rugiceps
Scotland Beach, St. Mary's County, Maryland, USA
May 9, 2014
I’m uncertain whether this is Dyscinetus morator or Euetheola humilis. Unfortunately, the shape of the clypeus is somewhat obscured by sand and the BugGuide species pages don’t make it clear what the differences are supposed to be in the shape of the apical edge of the hind tibia. Arnett et al., state that the hind tibia of Euetheola is “strongly broadened to the apex” (vol. 2, page 64) but any difference in this regard between these species is too subtle for me.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks
what characteristics did you use to decide between the 2? The more I learn the less I'll have to bother editors at BugGuide for ID help

One way to tell them apart
is to look at the clypeus. D. molitor has a round, oval looking clypeus whereas E. humbles has somewhat pointy clypeus resembling isosceles trapezoid. You'll notice the difference when you compare the pics of the two.

thanks again
Never having seen either species before and with sand on the clypeus of this beetle, I wasn't confident I could make that call myself
