Scholastic Dart -
Euxoa scholastica
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA

At first I thought this might be a Peridroma saucia - Variegated Cutworm but it was IDed as Euxoa messoria.

I sent copies of these two moths to Les Ferge - Wis. Entomological Society -- "These are both E. scholastica. The orbicular spot is smaller and round with a complete black outline. E. messoria, which is easily confused, has a larger (about 2/3 size of reniform), oval orbicular with the black outline broken toward the costa."

Euxoa scholastica?
The perfectly round orbicular spot is more characteristic of
Euxoa scholastica
which is also possible at this location at this time of year. I would have a hard time placing this one at
messoria
without seeing the hindwing. I am curious to know who identified this as
messoria
?

Euxoa moth
As it was many years ago since I posted this moth I don't remember where the suggested ID came from. It may have come from a comment on one of the Facebook moth group pages. I posted another moth from 2015 which looks similar.
