Halictidae: Sphecodes sp. - Sphecodes heraclei - female

Halictidae: Sphecodes sp. - Sphecodes heraclei - Female
Cook County, Illinois, USA
November 8, 2009
From Marshall's Insects: Their Natural History and Diversity (p.563):
Sphecodes are kleptoparasites that develop on the pollen supplies salted away in the nests of other halictid bees. Kleptoparasitism is a common strategy, and it is usual for the kleptoparasitic larva to kill off the host's egg or larva before digging into the stored food. Sphecodes, however, is unusual because the adult bee kills the host's egg.
