Tiny Springtail - Ceratophysella

Tiny Springtail - Ceratophysella
Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada
April 14, 2007
Size: Max. 0.4 mm
Next to a very small (~0.15 mm) mi*te found in polypore fungus, this springtail is the second smallest arthropod that I have photographed so far. Presumably came from moss which I had been observing for soil arthropods. This was the larger of two individuals which I noticed were crawling along the bottom of the rearing tub in which I had placed the moss. Though small, this dark-field photo clearly shows the swollen antennae and dark eye(?) spots.
