Redroot leaf mine, upper side of leaf - Stigmella ceanothi

Redroot leaf mine, upper side of leaf - Stigmella ceanothi
Sy Runkel, Monona County, Iowa, USA
June 3, 2014
Redroot, Ceanothus herbaceus, leaf miner from a Loess Hills prairie remnant collected June 1, 2014
I was curious as to whether or not this leaf mine was connected to the small lep larva on the surface of the leaf, caught in it's shed.
C. Eiseman ID'd both the leaf miner and the larva and they are/were not related.

Moved from Stigmella.

Moved from Bucculatrix anaticula.

Nah, I had it right before. Although no one has ever reared an eastern Stigmella from Ceanothus, there is a species known from larvae. I still think this larva is the Bucculatrix though.

What would
that species be?
Thanks.

An undescribed species
I reared a few from Ceanothus americanus this year.

I hadn't registered how tiny this mine is. Both the mine and the larva seem consistent with Bucculatrix, and there are no known eastern Stigmella species on Ceanothus. See notes on the guide page--definitely worth adding to your long list of things to follow up on.

Charley!!
Wow. That is 2 mysteries solved in 2 days.

(Eggs of Cassida rubiginosa being the first mystery)
On both of these mysteries I was convinced there was not enough information to get an ID to family, let along species.
Great sleuthing.

Lep mine, yes...
...but it's a Stigmella mine and that doesn't look like a Stigmella larva.
