black millipede

black millipede
Seminole Canyon State Historic Park, Val Verde County, Texas, USA
April 6, 2007
Size: 4 inches
These unique black millipedes were very common on open rock below the rim of the canyon, in the scrubby Chihuahuan Desert. The locals said that above the rim of the canyon all the millipedes were a dark red color. Is this black one just an odd color form or a different species? I have been coast to coast and never seen a large millipede this color.

The red millipeds on the rim
The red millipeds on the rim are surely one of the 4 US species of Orthoporus (Spirostreptida: Spirostreptidae). This one is a different color because it is a totally different milliped, a representative of the family Atopetholidae, order Spirobolida.
