Mite (?) on Osmia - Osmia

Mite (?) on Osmia - Osmia
Elm Creek Park Reserve, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA
May 13, 2012
What is this fat mite-like thing wedged between the metasoma and propodeum of this bee? It's way too big for the mites I usually see clinging to Osmias. And the weirdest part, I have another picture of this bee 3 seconds later, and the mite is gone.

I think the bee is Osmia caerulescens nectaring on Virginia waterleaf.
