Diptera: Syrphid? - Eristalinus taeniops
Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA

Was trying to fit this into Palpada sp., but couldn't find anything in the guide with eyes like that. Maybe some other genus (even outside Syrphidae entirely)?

Moved
Moved from Syrphid Flies.

Martin Hauser says here that it was introduced into Florida. I think we have enough evidence to place it.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Looks a lot like Eristalinus taeniops
but that seems to be a west coast species.

V's flyguide can be found
here
One with similar eyes is but it doesn't seem to be found in Florida

There is an entry at inaturalist.org
that indicates it has been found in Florida-

Thanks!
Wow. This web site never ceases to amaze me. So many people who know so many things. I'll wait for confirmation before assigning it (in my own files, as I'm not a bugguide editor) to E. taeniops, but it looks pretty convincing to me!
That inaturalist.org page indicates presence in Florida but it doesn't have any documentation for it; I'll see if I can dig any deeper there.

There is a paper here

Thank you!
Exactly what I was looking for.
