Ant male with long red-tipped abdomen on grass - Formica - male

Ant male with long red-tipped abdomen on grass - Formica - Male
6 miles NW Lyons, Boulder County, Colorado, USA
July 2, 2011
This male winged ant with a sausage-like abdomen with red-tipped tail was on grass with another very different winged ant, also on grass, very close by. I will submit images of both ants under two different number. Two other images of this ant show the long smokey wings with raised sculptured veins.

Formica male rufa group
Thanks so much for assigning this male ant and the female to the rufa group of Formica ants. Your help is so much appreciated.

Formica sp. male
This wasp-like outline is the hallmark of the Formica-males, even other members of the Formicini-tribe are different.
The (very) smoky wings could indeed help an American specialist of this large genus. Otherwise the males are very difficult to tell apart at this magnification, even at the species group level.
Only the typically slender (and often differently colored) males of the pallidefulva-group can be ruled out for sure.
