Appears to be a Tabanid, pretty good match for Hybomitra lasiophthalma.
Proper placement would be appreciated.

Moved from Flies.

Indeed
That is the beast. That shiny triangular tubercle and the dotted wings are pretty good characters. Tony must have been so hypnotized by your deer fly shots he has put off looking at your Tabanids. Good looking biting flies you have here.

Correct diagnosis doctor
Just 'blown away' by the deer fly shots; will attempt an ID of the other species after a few mugs of strong black coffee (or should I take 2 Aspirin and call you in the morning?)

Many thanks for the affirming comments.
Our formula for deriving fun and satisfaction from BugGuide:
Try to provide the best possible images of our subjects, be on the lookout for ways to improve them, and make every effort to ID them before posting.
Then with great comments from the likes of you and Herschel, I can tackle our backlog of images on just coffee without the aspirin!.
To top everything off, I just took a generous dose of Herschel's superb images from Costa Rica that he has recently posted on his website.
