Barklouse on Rhododendron leaf - Ectopsocus californicus - female

Barklouse on Rhododendron leaf - Ectopsocus californicus - Female
Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
April 17, 2007
Size: 3mm
I found this barklouse under a Rhododendron leaf, laying eggs. It looks like the same species as previous ones I've posted, like .

Cheryl
may I use this image (with proper credit to you) an a paper I am preparing on egg guarding in psocids? You don't know how much it would mean to me.

I was so glad to see this image!
I am studying egg guarding in Ectopsocus meridionalis and I plan to look at E. californicus too. Your image tells me that californicus also lays eggs in clutches and this female just may be guarding her clutch.

Family Ectopsocidae
I agree that it looks similar. To me the lack of a Cubital Loop places this small clear winged Psocopteran in the Family Ectopsocidae. In Canada we have two species in this family both from the genus Ectopsocus but I am not familiar with identification characters for this family so I will leave it at the Family level for now. Cheryl your Rhododendrons seem to be a popular hangout for Psocoptera.

I always look for them there
I find them under the English Holly leaves, too. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that they both have evergreen leaves.
