unknown ant - Cyphomyrmex minutus

unknown ant - Cyphomyrmex minutus
Naples , Collier County, Florida, USA
December 29, 2014
Size: 1.75 mm
This ant was removed from a pine needle litter collection under a Southern Florida Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii densa). As can be seen, it has a 2-segmented waist and does not appear to have a stinger. Because its eyes are less than half the length of the head, I suspect it is Subfamily Myrmicinae, but I am really not sure. It does have a small spine (bump?) on the first segment of the waist that is visible in the second photograph.

This is Cypho-myrmex, one of the so-called lesser fungus-growing ants, probably C.*minutus. If you could post some images of the ant dried out instead of thorugh the meniscus of a liquid, that would be evne better for ID.

The best thing we could do, I think, is call this a member of the Cyphomyrmex rimosus group and leave it at that. There are some annoying problems with rimosus which make me doubt precise identifications for this group. Educate me, James, if you know better!
Cheers.

Today
I took some photographs of the dried Cypho-myrmex. You are right, there is much more detail in the dry specimen photographs. I will remember that for future posts.

Thank you.
I will try to take some dry specimen photos and add them to this post.
