Hanging spider - Tetragnatha

Hanging spider - Tetragnatha
Fairfield - Forest Preserve, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
April 17, 2007
Found in second growth forest just hanging from a single thread in the middle of "nowhere" - by which I mean there appeared to be nothing to support the thread! Must have been a cross thread betweeen trees somewhere.

This spider
looks like belong to genus Tetragnatha . There is a group of crane flies in the genus Styringomyia that look very much like this group of spiders when in their rest posture. We don't have this group crane flies in USA, but they are in South American and the Old World. - Chen

Thanks
Chen. The mimicry in nature is intriguing.

Very
cool!
See here for jumping spider mimicry.

Amazing the patterns we see.
