Leaf beetle? - Cerotoma trifurcata

Leaf beetle? - Cerotoma trifurcata
Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
April 17, 2007
Size: < 1 cm
Caught this one in passing. Looks like he/she just emerged and hasn't fed enough to be colored yet. Thought maybe the spots on the elytra would ring a bell though nothing catches my attention scanning our pages.

Cerotoma
well it sure is a leafbeetle (in the subfamily Galerucinae). From the antenna I suspect it is Cerotoma. Cerotoma trifurcata is the common species and is variable in colouration. It is however normally red with black spots; nothing like this one.

you got it
Cerotoma trifurcata - see color forms here and here

now BugGuide has them too! :)

Hey, Tim
Thanks! That brings our uncertainty to a resounding, whomping end. :)

Thanks
for the thoughts. I raised some Chrysomela last year that came out looking pale and colorless like this so I thought maybe they all do that until they feed.
