Leaf miner damage has been very common on small birch trees around here in the past few years. I identified this one using Rose and Lindquist (1997) Insects of Eastern Hardwood Trees, but I'm not 100% sure I'm correct. These pics were discovered after I had placed the Nefusa ambigua images into the Heterarthrinae.

So, I think these may be TENTHREDININAE Heterarthrinae: Profenusa thomsoni - Amber-Marked Birch Leaf Miner.

The mines and larva both key to this species using:

Digweed, Scott C., Chris J. K. MacQuarrie, David W. Langor, Daryl J. M. Williams, John R. Spence, Kathryn L. Nystrom, and Louis Morneau. 2009. Current status of invasive alien birch-leafmining sawflies (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) in Canada, with keys to species. The Canadian Entomologist 141(3):201-235.

Profenusa thomsoni mines do not begin at the leaf margin.
