unfortunate wood wasp - Xiphydria abdominalis - Female
Turtle Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin, USA
August 7, 2010
Size: about 1 cm
While trying to ID this wood wasp, I found that there are not many photos on BG, so I thought I'd add this one. The poor insect is dead and being consumed by a crab spider, of which only the legs are visible on the other side of the victim. The bright red abdomen caught my eye and I didn't realize the reason it seemed dead until I later saw the enlarged photo. It was located on the broken end of a branch.
