Purple Sage galls - Rhopalomyia

Purple Sage galls - Rhopalomyia
Agoura Hills, Los Angeles County, California, USA
February 23, 2015
In the process of trying to rear this. This is one of a few larvae I found inside some younger galls. It seems the aphid is not the answer though, and rather this is a midge gall.

Note the darkened gall, which turns black within a minute of being penetrated.
