Unidentified structure/mine on apple leaf - Callisto denticulella

Unidentified structure/mine on apple leaf - Callisto denticulella
Fredericton (Lincoln Trail), York County, New Brunswick, Canada
September 9, 2014
I'm not sure what this is on this apple leaf. What looks like silk covers some brown scratch marks.

Glad I could be of help, Charley. One new species for BugGuide!

Gracillariidae
This is a young mine of a gracillariid. What looks like silk is the loosened upper epidermis; it is white because the larva was mostly feeding on sap rather than tissue. The brown streaks are typical frass of a sap-feeding larva. If I remember correctly, an upper surface mine should be Callisto rather than Parornix, but I'll have to check my notes.
