5th instar green form Proserpinus lucidus - Proserpinus lucidus
6-7 miles east of Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
April 21, 2014
Hostplant: Clarkia sp. probably Winecup Clarkia (Clarkia purpurea). Photograph of wild larva in the field. Habitat: Blue Oak grassland. This photograph shows a larger 5th instar larva hiding on the ground while not engaged in feeding. The 4th instar larvae (like this one ) (and possibly the young 5th instar larvae) hide clinging to the base of the plant, instead of leaving the plant entirely.
