white springtail - Heteromurus nitidus

white springtail - Heteromurus nitidus
Wayland, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
April 19, 2007
Size: ~1mm
Found under a rock.

Thanks Frans
You keep astonishing me with your identifications of these springtails! I had no hope that this would get identified, especially to species. Now that you mentioned what to look for, the red eye patch and the 4th segment size are evident.

Heteromurus nitidus
A juvenile specimen. Adults are up to 2.5 mm.
Note the relatively short 4th abdominal segment. Compare this with Orchesella. Both genera are united in the subfamily Orchesellinae. Heteromurus is covered with scales. And has 1+1 single eyes on small reddish eyepatches.
