Pale Swallowtail Papilio eurymedon - Papilio eurymedon

Pale Swallowtail Papilio eurymedon - Papilio eurymedon
Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary Modjeska Canyon, Orange County, California, USA
February 25, 2015
This photo was taken on a hillside in the canyon area behind the nature center. It seems early in the season according to the guide book but I was struck at the time at how light in color this butterfly was, it just did not look like a tiger swallowtail, so much black and the yellow was so much more like white with a wash of yellow. So I thought perhaps it was a Pale Swallowtail Papilio eurymedon and I hope you can tell me for sure. I have a couple of other pics if needed. Thanks- Diane

Correct
Yes, this looks like a Pale Swallowtail (Papilio eurymedon). As you noticed the color is quite light; also, the black forewing bar nearest the thorax is very thick. I don't think it is necessarily too early for rutulus, they've been out for nearly two weeks for sure, and possibly longer, farther north in SLO county.

...as close to "just the bug" as possible. Only you and the editors have the ability to view the full-size image. Everyone else is left looking at a little butterfly in a lot of unnecessary background. :)
