Mystery structures in a dry creekbed

Mystery structures in a dry creekbed
Mason, Mason County, Texas, USA
March 10, 2015
I just happened to spot these odd structures in a dry creekbed on a Mason County ranch. They reminded me of a green lacewing larva that uses debris as camouflage. These structures are built of teeny-tiny rocks and dirt, and topped with a pebble like a roof. Any ideas of what made them? There was a small community of them. I'll add more photos.

Trapdoor Spiders?
They remind me of trapdoor spider turrets with a rock for a lid.

Maybe so
I didn't want to destroy one to find out what was inside, though. Couldn't bring myself to do that because someone spent a lot of time building. Just hoping someone here has some insight. :-)
