Synonyms and other taxonomic changes
Parathalassius Mik and other former Microphorinae are now classified as Dolichopodidae. Despite the strong resemblence to Empididae s. lat. they are more closely related to Dolichopodidae, and are not considered distinctive enough to warrant separate families.
Explanation of Names
Of Greek origin, can be translated "near the sea"
Identification
Gray with white hairs (typical of beach Diptera), eyes hairy, scape well developed, wing similar to Oedaleinae but anal lobe slightly reduced, cell cup closed by a straight vein, scutellum with 2-3 pairs of marginal bristles.
Range
In North America restricted to the Pacific coast. Also present in Europe.
