Proserpinus clarkia - Proserpinus clarkiae - male

Proserpinus clarkia - Proserpinus clarkiae - Male
Junction of Highway 229 and 58, 4.5 miles east of Santa Margarita, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
The pupa was overwintered outdoors. The moth emerged on March 14th 2015 at a little before 11:00 PM. As I understand, this definitely does not reflect the time of day the moth normally emerges at (see Osborne, 1995 Journal of Lep. Soc.). I believe the moth emerged at night, because I exposed it to light, and had carried it into the lighted house, to do some stuff regarding its eminent emergence the next day (as I then thought). The eclosion itself only took a few seconds. I saw it start to break out, went and got the camera which was less than 20 feet away, but the moth was already out when I came back! For various reasons, I don't think this date of emergence necessarily reflects the date that the moths can be found flying at this colony. This photo is from about 28 minutes after eclosion. The color may be a little off in this photo.
