Large-ish Syrphid from the Griswold Hills - Scaeva affinis - female

Large-ish Syrphid from the Griswold Hills - Scaeva affinis - Female
Griswold Hills, San Benito County, California, USA
March 8, 2015
I think this was something like 8-10 mm long. Several feeding on flowers just as the sun hit them, on a north-facing slope of arid grassland.

Moved
Moved from Syrphid Flies.

Tricksy fly! This is a melanistic Scaeva pyrastri - you can just barely see the markings on the abdomen. Those, combined with the haired eyes and curved vein, are diagnostic.
