Hemileuca - Hemileuca grotei

Collected 5 Hemileuca caterpillars which are virtually identical to each other. Saw several more but left them where they were. The only plant I found them on was an oak tree, I believe live oak, but some were wandering nearby. I have them all in the same cage now with the oak leaves. I really think these are H. maia or H. grotei, but I wouldn't want to screw up a hemileuca ID twice in one day :P.

... So I'll let some one else confirm it before I move it.

Hemileuca grotie. H. maia peigleri would be my other choice, but that looks like H. grotie.

Certainly look like Hemileuca spines

to us, but we don't know which species. Will move these to genus page.

yeah... I left it on the ID r

yeah... I left it on the ID request page because I figured more people would see it there. Hopefully I will be successful in raising them and I can identify them for sure when I see the adults. As it stands, I am leaning towards H. grotei. According to Wagner's book, that species is found in central texas (the only location he mentions in the very short section devoted to the species), and feeds on live oak, which is the host plant these guys were found on. If this ID is confirmed, how do I create a new Guide Page?
