Synonyms and other taxonomic changes
Based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis of subfamilial relationships within Braconidae, Sharanowski et al. (2011)(1) demoted subfamily Blacinae to tribe (Blacini), and placed this new tribe in subfamily Brachistinae.
Numbers
2 genera out of 11 world genera present in Nearctic: Blacus (common), and Dyscoletes (rare, 1 species in Nearctic)
Identification
May not be monophyletic. Difficult to diagnose as a group.(Sharkey, M.J. 1997. Subfamily Helconinae. In:(2)
In both Blacus and Dyscoletes, unlike Brachistini, 2cu-a of forewing absent, thus first subdiscal cell open distally
Blacus: distinguished by the following:
(2) anterior of 1st metasomal segment with deep dorso-lateral pits
(3) metasomal tergites not fused into a carapace.
Dyscoletes can be distinguished from Blacus by presence of 2nd submarginal cell and vein r-m. Other features:
(1) fore wing m-cu arising apically (distad) of 2RS; 2nd submarginal cell 5-sided
(2) metasomal tergites not fused into a carapace.

Range
Blacus: world wide: about 40 species in New World
Dyscoletes: Holarctic: 1 Nearctic and 1 Palaearctic
Food
Poorly known. Larvae of Blacus species feed on larval beetles. Larvae of two Dyscoletes species attack larvae of genus Boreus (Mecoptera: Boreidae).(2), (4)
