Collage of Wing images for E. caliptera and E. dorcadion - Exoprosopa
This collage is intended to supplement the 2007 post of Marie Stiles below:
The top image in the collage is from
www.drawwing.org, the bottom image is from the
MCZ website. The middle image is from the
1st image in Marie Stiles's post.
The "See Also" section of the
info page here summarizes characters for separating
E. caliptera and
E. dorcadion. The collage above is meant to help evaluate Marie's post vis-a-vis these two candidate species.
Note that in Marie's specimen the brown wing infuscation "spills beyond" the apical portion of vein R2+3 and includes a hyaline spot below vein R1 (and just below the tip of the subcosta)...which is characteristic of
E. caliptera. On the other hand, scrutinizing the apical-most hyaline patch of the wing, the narrow anterior (spur-shaped) sinus is much narrower than in typical
caliptera (or even
dorcadion for that matter!).
As far as the markings on the dorsum of the abdomen goes, the overall pattern in Marie's specimen seems to match better with typical
caliptera than with typical
dorcadion ...though the narrowness of the white band on the 2nd tergite seems more akin to
dorcadion.
Thus the species ID for Marie's specimen is tricky, as characters of both species are present...though I'd say overall
E. caliptera might be the better call (if one is to be made, I suppose it could be some other taxon).
