Size: 4 cm.
Plant does not seem one of the usually cited hosts for this species, If I am correct.

Hemileuca burnsi
I wouldn't have paid it a second look, if not for the food plant (and it does appear to be eating it). These do look a lot alike
Chlosyne
caterpillas.
A few good clues - mature caterpillar in early spring; feeding on
Psorothamnus
; no mid-dorsal row of spines down the back (have to look close); and spines on the thorax are longest. I'm guessing this was a bit larger than any
Chlosyne
caterpillar as well.
