Eyespots of hind wing differ greatly in size
-

John, I had the same question
since my guides for Mangrove indicate small even sized eyespots on the dorsal HW. But the orange surrounding of the FW eyespot is very distinctive so I examined the Caribbean segregate which represents the FL Mangrove Buckeye on Butterflies of American. Several of these representative specimens have a large basal HW eyespot and a smaller one distal as this specimen does.
