moth - Thiotricha - BugGuide.Net

Genus confirmed by SangMi Lee

Species ID not available from photos alone. Gregory, you wouldn't have happened to collect this one, would you? Apparently two species of Thiotricha are known from the US, but neither are present on Pohl's checklist. I'll do some more research. Moved from Twirler Moths and kin.

"Thanks for contacting me. I have looked at your photos at the bugguide.net, yes it looks to me a species of genus Thiotricha. However I don't go for giving IDs of species just based on photos of imago without seeing genitalia slides or actual specimen. One of reasons is the wing colors on photos easily to get differed by flash lights, etc. Sorry for not being able to help out further.
I am aware that T. sciurella has been known in North America. Also T. laterestriata is discovered recently by my colleague. If you would be interested in sending specimens to me, I could look at and dissect them to get identified to species level."

Thiotricha?

I think this is an example of Thiotricha (Gelechiidae: Thiotrichinae). If my hunch is correct, it would represent a new genus record for the United States. There are three described species from the Caribbean: Thiotricha godmani, T. laterestriata, and T. sciurella. I will send these images to Dr. SangMi Lee for confirmation.

This is a toughy. I would think Genus Phyllocnistis but yours looks gray not white. This gray one doesn't seem to have the spikey tail of yours

. This Genus is gray and spikey but I could only fine one listed for Florida and there are not pictures. Hodges #0245 – Coptodisca condaliae. I finally gave up.
