Size: ~1cm

Found on Sargent cypress, Hesperocyparis sargentii, there were oval emergence holes on many of the woody cones/berries? that would have been the right size for the beetles. Maybe Chrysobothris nixa

? The abdomen was metallic blue when it took flight. The Field Guide to California Beetles also reports this species feeding on living Sargent cypress.

This appears to be a female.

This appears to be a female. I have reared the species from cones of Sargent cypress in Marin Co.--the type locality is in S.L.O. Co.--and the holes you saw were made by it emerging. C. nixa larvae bore in the wood.
