weevil - Curculio

weevil - Curculio
Drumore, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA
October 24, 2014
Found this on a stone column holding the rails at Hawk Point lookout under a tree that might have been Shagbark Hickory - or not.

I thought the Weevil was "waving" it's snout from side to side. Another person thought it had a bit of spiderweb caught on the snout and the waving was the Weevil trying to remove it.

When I enlarged the pictures I was surprised to find one where the Weevil had its snout in the fruiting body of lichen, or so it seemed to me, and I reached the, probably mistaken, conclusion that the Weevil was eating spores.

I enjoyed seeing the antennae when I looked at the pictures. I had no idea such a thing existed and tried to find better pictures of the tip of the snout on-line but was unsuccessful. If anyone reads this and happens to know of a link where I can see that, I'd be grateful.

The Weevil made my day -- wish I had a good side-shot to give you
