This sort of "flew/dropped" to the ground beside me the other day, the only photo I got before it flew away again. Well, ok the only half decent photo. I'll add the other that will be frassed, but at least the other will show the length of the wings when closed. Thank you for any help.

Don't expect an awful lot.
There are at least 5,000 species in the U.S., and they are often difficult to ID. Perhaps you'll get a genus or species--but I'd consider yourself lucky if someone gives you a subfamily. :)

Yeah, for sure - I did a fair bit of googling last night, to find just HOW MANY are out there (and un-ID'd as well) so yup - will be happy if it gets any further. Thanks, Ken.

 
There is a decent chance ...
... this belongs to the Ichneumoninae, but taking this any further would be very difficult.
