Moved
Moved from Hide Beetles. Weak but distinct pronotal depressions can be clearly seen in your second photo, which leads to T. scaber.

T. scaber.
Thanks Brad.

Moved
Moved from ID Request. Hide Beetle - thank you. I have the beetle if any images will help ID to species.

check with Brad Barnd

I think it is Trox aequalis
based on the pronotum appearing to lack the ridges and depressions found in some Trox species; if that is the case, then I think T. aequalis is the only viable candidate. Size of this species is 5 to 6 mm. Vaurie (1) records it as far west as TX-AZ-CO-ND so Montana seems reasonable.

But if the angle is throwing me off and those depressions/ridges are there, i'm not sure of the species at all.

6 mm
just measured today.

Thanks Brad
I'll get some additional angles and put in the size today.

The genus is Trox.
Family Trogidae. Getting them down to species is almost impossible.
