Chlaenius aestivus, larva - Chlaenius aestivus

Chlaenius aestivus, larva - Chlaenius aestivus
Warren County, Virginia, USA
April 25, 2015
Size: 6mm
Reared from mud egg cells laid by adults in captivity. See this posting:
I came home from a ~two week "vacation" and was thrilled to find two of these larvae in the container with the rock that was covered in eggs. I don't know the exact day they emerged, but I do believe these are 1st instars.

So far, both individuals have fed greedily on hemolymph from mealworm pupae and larvae. They also ate some springtails I found and put in the container (remains visible here).

To me, this is a beautiful insect. The white markings on the "tail" are striking, along with the pale legs and contrasting head and body.
Markedly different from another likely-1st instar posted by Charley Eiseman here:
Wish my photo was as good as his!
