Size: .5 inch
Black smooth upper and lower body, light tan hair on the sides. Small white dot on upper body behind head. Found nesting in blue tarp. Nest with larvae found inside.

My guess would be an Eastern Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa virginica

This is too small to be a carpenter bee. Like their name suggests, carpenter bees make nests in wood, not tarps. I'd say this is a Bombus species.
