Coccon contructed from branches? - Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis

Coccon contructed from branches? - Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis
Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA
April 29, 2015
Size: 3 - 4 Inches (est.)
Found this in a Chinese maple tree while I was mowing my yard yesterday. Looks to be some type of cocoon to me, but with branches?
I tapped it to make sure it was not some type of strange growth or see on my tree, but it feels like how I would expect cocoon to feel. I do not believe this is something grown from the tree.
