This is appears to be a male Crocidosema plebejana which is sexually dimorphic. The dark patch on the basal third of the forewing reaches to the coastal margin and extends to the apex. This is the only Crocidosema plebejana in CA. (1)

Kim, this is only the second one submitted from California to BG. These are very hard to identify to species, but the markings on the costa, especially the small O, and the characteristics of the folded tail make me sure of the Genus. I copied your photo and rotated it to the horizontal and darkened and sharpened it a bit. If you would copy your original and work on it a bit and replace this photo it would be a better addition to the guide. Thank you.
